February 11, 2016 - More than 200 jobs available in aerospace

Over 2,000 young people and members of the aerospace industry attend AéroPortail: Vitrines 2016 at the Montréal Science Centre

Montréal, February 11, 2016 – Aéro Montréal (www.aeroMontréal.ca) has kicked off its 10th anniversary celebrations with the holding of AéroPortail: Vitrines 2016, a one-of-a-kind recruitment event and presentation of aerospace trades in Québec organized in partnership with Emploi Québec - Montréal Island. More than 2,000 young people and members of the industry attended this unique event today at the Montréal Science Centre.

“The Québec aerospace sector is an important source of new high value-added jobs for our economy,” said Suzanne M. Benoît, President of Aéro Montréal. “More than 200 jobs are currently available in Québec companies. Over the past year, major prime contractors and SMEs have announced major contracts, established strategic alliances and promising projects, unveiled investments in research and development, and implemented new manufacturing technologies.”

An event in two parts
The first part, AéroPortail: Vitrines 2016 (www.aeromontreal.ca/aeroportail-vitrines-2016/, open to the general public, attracted 2,000 visitors, including 600 high school students. This one-day event was marked by five highlights:
- Meetings with more than 50 major prime contractors and SMEs to explore career opportunities and learn more about the 200 available jobs;
- A presentation about aerospace training by educational institutions in collaboration with CRIAQ and the NSERC, including the École nationale d’aérotechnique, a number of CEGEPs in Greater Montréal, the École des métiers de l'aérospatiale de Montréal, the engineering faculties of Concordia, École Polytechnique, ÉTS, Laval, McGill and Sherbrooke, as well as student clubs;
- A demonstration of aerospace trades by CAMAQ, industry leaders and technical schools, including Air Canada, CAE, CanRep, Créaform, Leesta Industries, Nav Canada and the Des Moulins vocational training centre;
- High-caliber conferences by the Canadian Armed Forces, Groupe 55e avenue and MDA, as well as panel discussions on the theme of employment in aerospace;
- Presentations on rockets and cargo planes by student clubs and the “Passion for Flight” program that aims to demonstrate the principles surrounding the manufacture and flight of an aircraft to high school students.

“The extraordinary collaboration between all the members of our industry, research institutions, universities and colleges, as well as governments, is producing promising projects like this one, which aim to spark young people’s interest in science and technology and, of course, aerospace, while contributing to school retention,” said Ms. Benoît.

A “Red Carpet” evening at the IMAX theater closed the event with a special presentation of the film "Living in the Age of Airplanes.” The evening also provided an opportunity to highlight the 10th anniversary of Aéro Montréal and the 75th anniversary of Montréal-Trudeau Airport in the presence of many distinguished guests. They included the Honorable Marc Garneau, Canada's Minister of Transport; Lieutenant General Michael Hood, Commander of the Royal Canadian Air Force; Greg Fergus, Parliamentary Secretary to the federal Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development; François Blais, Québec Minister of Employment and Social Solidarity; Denis Coderre, Mayor of Montréal; Fang Liu, Secretary General of ICAO; and Julie Payette, Director of the Montréal Science Centre. A drone race organized among student clubs in collaboration with CRIAQ wrapped up the event.
