Alcoa Foundation Grants Aéro Montréal $20,000 to Engage Students in Flight Program

Laval, Quebec, July 23, 2015 – Today, Alcoa Foundation announced a $20,000 (USD) grant to Aéro Montréal to support the Quebec think tank’s efforts to develop the next generation of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) professionals.  Aéro Montréal mobilizes aerospace industry players, including companies, educational and research institutions, and associations and unions, around common goals and actions to increase the cohesion and optimize the competitiveness of Quebec’s aerospace cluster. Through this grant more than 5,000 students in grades 5 through 8 from 100 schools will increase their knowledge of potential careers in aerospace and other STEM-related fields.

“The younger generation is vital to our strategy for expanding the aerospace sector since it constitutes the workforce of tomorrow. Getting young people enthusiastic about science and technology, particularly aerospace, and encouraging them to stay in school are a priority for Aéro Montréal,” Suzanne M. Benoît, President of Aéro Montréal, said. “Alcoa Foundation’s commitment to supporting STEM education will contribute substantially to expanding our efforts in the Laval and North Shore school boards.”

The funds will support Aéro Montréal's Passion for Flight initiative, which aims to increase interest in STEM, especially aerospace, and increase school retention by engaging students in interactive classroom-based workshops and inter-school competitions that link science and experimentation to the improvements that result from technology.

“Alcoa Foundation is proud to support STEM education in the community of Laval. Sharing the opportunity that exists in advanced manufacturing for those who pursue a career in a STEM-related field is a top priority for Alcoa Foundation. The future strength of Alcoa communities worldwide depends on the education, ambition, and success of our youth” said Ryan Kish, Program Manager, Alcoa Foundation.
